RKD Netherland Institute for art History
For over 30 years, the Amsterdam-based gallery Art & Project has been the focal point for the development of contemporary art in the Netherlands and far beyond. From 1968 to 2001, founders Adriaan van Ravesteijn and Geert van Beijeren organised a pioneering programme of work by both national and international artists, such as Sol LeWitt, Richard Long and John Baldessari. To raise awareness about their exhibitions, they published a total of 156 Art & Project Bulletins. Soon these Bulletins, published between 1968 and 1989, grew into an experimental medium.
The RKD manages the archives of Art & Project. It is an extensive archival collection covering the complete history of the gallery: correspondence with artists, photographic material of artworks and exhibitions, invitations, original drafts for the Art & Project Bulletins and almost nine hundred art and artist publications. The exhibition Fotografie in het kunstenaarsboek. Uit de collectie van Art & Project opens at the RKD in October. This exhibition shows a selection from Art & Project's collection of artists' books in which photography is the central component.
Museum Night visitors can immerse themselves in the world of Art & Project. Not only can you explore the exhibition, there is also the opportunity to join an in-depth guided tour by curator and Art & Project specialist Ton Geerts. In addition, you can design your own Bulletin at the Bulletin Bar. Under the guidance of artist Sarina Missot, you can use various drawing and painting techniques to create your own artist publication.
The idea of the Bulletin Bar was borrowed from the Kröller-Müller Museum. The exhibition at the RKD ties in with the exhibition Eerst komt de liefde voor de kunst. Art & Project in het Kröller-Müller Museum, on view from 30 September 2023 to 25 February 2024 at the Kröller-Müller Museum.
