RKD Talks: Edwin Buijsen on Adriaen van de Venne

Tuesday 11 December

Edwin Buijsen, Head of Collections at the Mauritshuis and research associate of the RKD, will hold an RKD Talk on Tuesday 11 December on his thesis on the works by Adriaen van de Venne. Tickets are available in our webshop.

Adriaen van de Venne

As a painter Adriaen van de Venne may not have reached the level of Rembrandt, Vermeer or Hals, though there are few peers who exceeded him when it comes to originality, perception and versatility. Furthermore, his rigorous decision at a crucial point in his painting career to limit himself to various tints of a single colour, the so-called grisaille technique, sets him apart from his peers and colleagues. After he moved from Middelburg to The Hague around 1625, his painting style, technique and artistic theme choices underwent drastic changes.
