RKD Netherland Institute for art History
On October 22nd, the landmark exhibition Vermeer and the Masters of Genre Painting: Inspiration and Rivalry will open at its third venue, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, after having welcomed thousands of visitors at the Louvre in Paris and the National Gallery of Ireland in Dublin. Bringing together the work of Johannes Vermeer and contemporary painters of exquisite scenes of everyday life, this exhibition gives visitors an insight into how these artists admired, inspired, and rivalled each other. The RKD collaborated on the research for the exhibition and was closely involved in the development of the website connectvermeer.org. The website explores the fascinating network of relationships among Dutch genre painters active 1650-1675 to a fuller extent than an exhibition could ever have, presenting and analyzing the artistic connections between nearly 900 paintings. Through a series of interactive visualizations, connectvermeer.org allows users to discover the interaction between Vermeer and sixteen of his contemporaries.By structuring the data from the RKD’s database RKDImages according to the CIDOC CRM top level model, and by making the data accessible under an open license, the website also provides a source of information to be used for further research and analysis.
