RKD digitises visual documentation with Picturae

With over 5.5 million photographs, reproductions and slides of works of art, the RKD’s holding of visual documentation has developed into the largest collection of its kind since its inception 85 years ago. To date the collection has been available in its entirety for consultation at the RKD. In order to allow future users the world over to access the material digitally, the RKD has come to an agreement with the digitisation company Picturae from Heiloo. This company came out on top in a European tendering competition. The RKD’s priority was to guarantee the quality of the images in the transition from analogue to digital. In the coming months we will be testing the process with Picturae and establishing a schedule for Phase I. First to be digitised will be: Old Netherlandish paintings, Old Netherlandish Drawings, Nineteenth-century Dutch and Belgian art.
