Artists4All: new Linked Open Data application to allow for online addition of artists' data

The RKD – Netherlands Institute for Art History is launching a new app, Artists4All. With this tool external art- and cultural historians will be able to add their knowledge about artists to the RKDartists& database. The Artists4All app is specifically intended for professionals working in archives, museums, universities and other knowledge or cultural institutions. However, the online RKDartists& database will be accessible to everyone.

RKDartists& is one of the databases set up by the RKD and is regarded by the cultural sector as a standard reference source for information about Dutch and Flemish artists of all periods. Accurate data concerning artists' birth and death dates, for example, or family relationships and places of work are often derived from RKDartists&. The database enjoys popularity outside the cultural field too with RKDartists& being a prime source for Wikipedia, for example.

Since its creation, RKDartists& has been maintained exclusively by the RKD, one of the world's foremost research centres for Dutch art history. Now, with the arrival of Artists4All, external experts will be able to add verified, specialist information to RKDartists& as well, and their valuable contributions will become available to the general public almost immediately.

Our supporters

Artists4All has been developed with support from the Mondriaan Fund and the Dutch Digital Heritage Network (Netwerk Digitaal Erfgoed – NDE). The aim of both organisations is to make cultural information available to the widest possible audience.

Linked Open Data

RKDartists& can be accessed as Linked Open Data via the NDE Network of Terms. Institutions will thus be able to use data from RKDartists& in their own collections management system. The first institution to use this new tool will be the Literature Museum in The Hague. The museum will be able to add information to RKDartists&, and this data will then immediately become available for use in their own system.
