Curriculum vitae and activities

Mireille Pondman (MSc) has served as Managing Director of the RKD – Netherlands Institute for Art History since April 2016. Prior to this, she was Managing Director of BISC, the organisation in charge of service and project management for public libraries in the province of Utrecht. Pondman studied Political Science and Public Administration at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and Museology at the Reinwardt Academy (Amsterdamse Hogeschool voor de Kunsten). Using her experience of transition and change management in organisations whose business is knowledge, she is leading the RKD in realising its 21st-century ambitions.

Mireille Pondman (1970) began her career as an adviser and trainer at the Dutch Open Air Museum in Arnhem, and Project Manager of the Netherlands Register of Museums (Muesumregister Nederland). She subsequently worked as an independent adviser in strategic development and public management for the leisure sector. In 2001 she went on to become policy adviser for the City of Gouda and in 2003 she was appointed Manager for Culture, Sport, Recreation and Urban Development. In 2007 she became Managing Director of BISC, the professional supervisory organisation for public libraries in the province of Utrecht. In this role, she transformed the supply and control-oriented organisation into an enterprising and demand-oriented network partner for public libraries. In 2011 she founded SUBporter in order to ensure the cost-effective use of money invested by BISC in business services within public libraries. This body helps cultural and social organisations to grow as businesses by providing advice and other services relating to ICT, HRM and finance. Pondman assumed her present position as the RKD's Managing Director in 2016. Her task is to organise a smooth transition to smart digitisation and increase the institute's earning capacity, while also enhancing its visibility and value to the community.

In addition to her regular activities, Pondman has held several supervisory and management positions. As vice chair and as portfolio holder for the Digital Library for the Association of Dutch Provincial Service Organisations (Samenwerkende Provinciale Serviceorganisaties Nederland – SPN), she contributed to the national harmonisation of back office processes and library systems. She also held the Lobby and Communication portfolio and worked on strengthening links between management layers in public libraries. Pondman was previously an inspector for primary education and plays this role currently for the Stichting Bibliotheekservice Passend Lezen, the national organisation that provides access to information and media for people with a reading impairment. Currently she is chair of the board of Poetry International, the international podium for poets in Rotterdam.
