Volgens de zoon van de kunstenaar (brief d.d. 13 september 1996) wordt zijn vader in Scheen ten onrechte opgevoerd als 'dekorateur en plateelschilder'. Dat was hij in het begin van zijn loopbaan - in 1908-1910 - toen hij in Makkum werkte. Na zijn vestiging in België heeft Hofman zich echter volledig, en met succes aldus de zoon, geconcentreerd op de schilderkunst.
