    He grew up in comfortable circumstances in his father's house ('De gecroonde handt') on the Raamgracht, who had a paint factory: he was initially raised to become a dyer, which he indeed became after his father's death; he became because of his marriage, a citizen on 29 July 1653 (Scheltema 1853); till 1663 he himself lived on the Keizersgracht, before he moved to the Koestraat in 1663, which house he already bought on the northside of the Koestraat for fl. 9600,- on 29 May 1661 (Obreen 1882-1883, p. 12). On 10 June 1666 Jan and his wife made their will as they were ill. He died however only in December 1679 as a widower, leaving all his possesions to his seven children (three daughters and four sons): apart from seven houses, a whole row of pieces of land in Amsterdam, a villa near Nieuwersluis aan de Vecht , the paint factory and many more miscellaneous possessions, among which a pleasure yacht, a sum of fl. 92.720,- in cash and one of the most extensive art collections of the century (c. 200 paintings, 6000 drawings by masters of all European nations) (Giltaij/Kelch 1996)
