Antwerp 1614-12-08/1618
Gonzales was baptized in the St. Joriskerk on December 8, 1614 (Th. van Lerius 1880, p 134) Still, there is uncertainty about his birth year because the baptist in 1614 was called Gonzala Coques: this may be an older sister of the painter, although Van Lerius showed conclusively that names ending on 'a' also occur for men in Antwerp. Underneath his engraved portrait in De Bie's Gulden Schilderkabinet (1662) his year of birth is 1618. The latter is unlikely, since Coques became an apprentice in 1626: that is far more likely at age 12 than at 8. For a more detailed discussion, see: Martin 1970. For the year of birth see also: Liskens-Pruss 2002, p. 23-26. She finds the date 1614, found by Van Lerius, the most likely. Houbraken assumed he was born in 1618.

Family relationships
this field records any family relationship to one or more other artist(s).
Son of Pieter Willemssen Cock and Anne Beys, named Jacops (van Lerius 1880, p. 132-133). He was married to Catharina Rijckaert on 11 August 1643 (1610-1674, daughter of David Rijckaert II and Catharina de Merre). David Rijckaert III was therefore his brother-in-law. Their daughter Catharina Gonzaline was born on January 5, 1644 (Van Lerius 1880, p. 140-141). 2nd marriage with Catharina Rysheuvels on March 21, 1675 (she died November 25, 1684) (Rombouts/Van Lerius 1872/1961, vol.1I, p.635-637, note 5). See also Liskens-Pruss 2002, p. 27-30.

You may also come across references to other artists if there was/is question of collaboration without a joint name. This is the case, for instance, with artists who rendered parts of works by other artists (such as with P.P Rubens and J. Brueghel I).

In about 1626 he became an apprentice, free master in the Guild during the period 18 september 1640-18 September 1641: Van Lerius 1880-1881 thought he could deduce from this great interval between these years that Gonzales made a trip abroad, for which there is no further evidence. He was member of the chamber of rethorics Antwerpen 'De Violieren' 1643-1644; member of the chamber of rethorics 'De Olijftak' , Antwerp 1661. Gonzales became court painter in 1671 in the service of Juan Dominico de Zuniga y Fonseca, governor for the Spanish Southern Netherlands in Brussels (Van Lerius 1880, p. 147). Houbraken thought that he had workd for Archduke Leopold Wilhelm of Austria, for the Elector Friedrich Wilhelm of Brandenburg, for the English court and for the House of Orange.
