Son of the painter Pieter Balten, a.ka. Pieter Custodis. He married the widow of goldsmith Bartholomaus Kilian I, who had died in 1583. Through this marriage he acquired the citizenship of Augsburg. Together they became parents of Raphael, David en Jacob Custos. He also became step-father of her children Lucas and Wolfgang Kilian (Appruhn-Radtke 1997).
