    c. 1645 he was a member of the Bentvueghels in Rome (Hoogewerff 1952). His bent name was bestowed on him in Rome when he was 17. It came about when he was admitted to the Society. His bent brothers had filled a paper snake inside with firecrackers, which they lit with a string smeared with gunpowder after placing Fries in the centre of this snake circle. Since he endured the blows and flames of the gunpowder so unflinchingly and good-naturedly without taking flight, they named him "Good-natured" (Houbraken 1719, p. 345-346).
