In 1795 he became director of the Akademie de bildenden Künste and in 1806 director of the Kaiserliche Gemäldegalerie. In 1807 he had to sell some of his paintings to the imperial gallery, i.e. a portrait by Van Dyck, another portrait by Van Dyck or Rubens and a head by Guercino.
