    Gude became - after initially he was rejected - student and later assistant at the Art Academy of Düsseldorf (Haverkamp).
  • Oslo 1848 - 1854
    Due to the war Gude returned to Norway where he decorated the pleasure house Oscarshall on Bygdøy near Christiania (Oslo) (Haverkamp)
  • Düsseldorf 1854 - 1862
    Gude returned in 1854 to Düsseldorf where he was appointed professor at the Art Academy (Haverkamp 2020). In the summer he often was in Norway (Lillesand, Christiania) or central Europe (Haverkamp)
  • Bettwys-y-Coed 1862 - 1864
    went to Wales in 1862 to escape personal problems and to join a group of artists there who specialized in landscape painting in the open air (Haverkamp)
  • Karlsruhe 1864 - 1880
    became professor at the art school in Karlsruhe; in this period he often went to the Chiemsee and Bodensee, but also visited the areas Sogn, Lista and Romsdalen in Norway (Haverkamp).
  • Berlijn 1880 - 1903
