Albrecht VII of Austria

male / Austrian
noble, clergyman, art collector, patron
Albrecht of Austria was Archbishop of Toledo, but in 1599 he gave up this position in order to marry his cousin Isabella Clara Eugenia, daughter of the Spanish king Philip II; together they became archdukes and viceroys for the Spanish king of the Southern Netherlands (nowadays Belgium). Their reign meant a golden age for the arts, churches were (re)built and the couple gave many assignments to artists, such as Jan Brueghel the Older and Peter Paul Rubens; art was used by Albrecht and Isabella as political propaganda and to reconvert the people to the catholic faith during the counter-reformation.
