tsarina of Russia from 1762 to 1796; bought 4,000 paintings in twenty years; she bought up entire collections or large parts of them; winter of 1763/1764 she bought the bulk of the collection of the Berlin dealer Johann Ernst Gotzkowsky, and in 1769 she bought six hundred paintings from Heinrich von Brühl; acquired the Pierre Crozat collection through Denis Diderot in 1772; the collection of Sir Horace Walpole of Houghton Hall became her property in 1779
