Ketel was the natural child of Elisabeth Jacobsdr Ketel and art collector Govert Jans van Proyen. His father was related to Wouter Crabeth. He married 1) in 1574 in London Aeltje Gerritsdr (died 1606), also from Gouda; the couple had three children who were baptized in London: Gedeon (1576–1579), Ezechiell (b. 1578), and Eve (b. 1579). The latter two had died by 28 February 1595, as was another son, Rafel, who was born in Amsterdam in 1581. A further son, Andries, died before November 1613 (Hearn 2004) an married 2) in Amsterdam on 4 October 1607 Aeltje Jansdr.

    c. 1584 Ketel made a 'portrait historié' of Rutger Jansz. for Hans Ophoghen from Amsterdam, as 'een opsiende Paulus' (Saint Paul, looking up to heaven); for Hans's brother Thomas, living in Danzig, he made a replica of this painting, together with five other life-size paintings of martyrs from the Old and the New Testament (Gerson 1942/1983, p. 499). He seems to have been a cripple since c. 1610: he already started to paint with his fingers and toes since 1599 (Luijten et al. 1993).
