art collector, collector of Dutch and Flemish painting, patron, amateur, draftsperson, poet
Reigned as Duke of Savoy 1580-1630. He was the first of the Savoia family to bring together a true collection of paintings. For this he had a 'galleria' added to the palace, which was decorated by Federico Zuccari. His collection included many works by Flemish and Dutch masters, especially landscapes, still lifes and portraits. His court painter was Jan Kraeck (until his death in 1607). Artists represented in the collection: Rubens and the Breughel family (Jan, Jan II, Pieter I and Pieter II). He also set up a 'Kunstkammer' in his palace, including drawings on the anatomy of birds, fish and plants. The galleria burned down in 1659, with the loss of many paintings. The city of Turin became an important center for theater and festivals, through the involvement of Carlo Emanuele. Many travelers from Northern Europe stayed there on their way to the south, for example Anthony van Dyck.
