Wilhelm Uhde was one of the first to collect cubist work by Pablo Picasso and George Braque. In 1907 he met Robert Delaunay, Henri Rousseau and Sonia Terk with whom he was married between 1908 and 1910. In 1908 he opened his gallery where he exhibited works by André Derain, Braque and Picasso, among others. In 1909 he commissioned Picasso to paint his portrait. Around 1910 Uhde also had contact with the Dutch painters Lodewijk Schelfhout and Conrad Kickert.
