At the age of 31 Ferdinand Albrecht I married Princess Christine of Hesse-Eschwege (1648-1702) on 26 November 1667. Together they would have nine children.

    In 1667, after long and heavy struggles to settle the inheretance, he was granted the Bevern Castle near Holzminden, an annual apanage, and the basic rights as a residence. In return, he renounced all demands on the government of the Principality of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel.
