    After his education in Weilburg, Mainz (Jesuieten Kolleg), Orléans and Siena, he became cannon at the Cathedral in Würzburg. In 1631 he fled for the Swedes to Cologne, only to return to Wurzburg in 1642.

    On 8 September 1642 he became Prince-Bishop of Würzburg and on 8 September 1645 Auxiliary Bishop of Mainz. He became the negotiator for Würzburg in the peace talks to end the Thirty Year's War. As reward for his pragmatism in the negotiations during the Peace of Westphalia/Münster, he was created Arch-Bishop of Mainz, and therefore at the same time Elector of Mainz, in 1647. In 1663 he also became bishop of Worms.
