Behrens deed de vooropleiding schilderkunst aan de Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Karlsruhe (1885-87). Hij kreeg in 1888-89 privé-onderwijs van Ferdinand Brütt in Düsseldorf en daarna van Hugo Kotschenreiter in München.
