Van der Willigen/De Kinkelder (typescript 1993/1998) (Hendrick BERCKMAN (1629 - buried 27 March 1679) Born in Klundert (near Breda). According to De Bie 1662 he was a pupil of Philips Wouwerman in Haarlem. Houbraken specified that he painted small battle pieces but could not make a living this way. This will have been in the years he spent as a very young official painter with Count Hendrick of Nassau, the governor in Hulst (near Antwerp) who died in 1652. He was advised then (by a.o. Jacob Jordaens) to switch to painting portraits and historical subjects. He joined the guild in Middelburg in 1655, where he spent the second half of his life as a successful painter of portraits (e.g. in Amsterdam, Rijksmuseum). Obreen mentions a painter Hendrick Berckman, who is recorded on 24 February 1654 as having paid his dues as a member of the guild in Leyden (vol. 5, p. 216). This is probably a different painter, as the record also mentions that he is no longer alive (redactie / edited by M. de Kinkelder, 2014))
