    In 1675 Stuven followed Johannes Voorhout, who painted portraits in Hamburg, to Amsterdam to become his pupil. After his training from Johannes Voorhout, Stuven painted flower and fruit still lifes with Willem van Aelst and Abraham Mignon. Became well-known in Amsterdam as an independent master.

    Was sentenced for 12 years imprisoned in the Rasphuis in Amsterdam for abusing his pupil Willem Grasdorp; was released after 6 years.
