Comment
The attribution of paintings to Jan Swart van Groningen is extremely problematic. Already Karel van Mander in his Schilderboeck (1604) states that he "cannot point a finger at any of his (painted) works", except that Swart's style was "closely after the manner of Schoorel", i.e. Jan van Scorel. Only a few woodcuts were known to Van Mander (cf. Miedema 1994, vol. I, p. 169). Even today the number of woodcuts that can be attributed to Jan Swart with certainty - most of them bear the monogram IS - is very limited (cf. Hollstein, vol. XXIX). Nevertheless, on the basis of stylistic comparison and comparable motives, art historians managed to compile a painted oeuvre which is rather questionable, especially when the actual sources - the handful of signed woodcuts and Van Mander's remarks - are taken into account (cf. Dyballa 2018).
