According to Hoogewerff 1952, Van der Ulft was in Rome c. 1650 and a member of the Bentveugels. Houbraken however claimed that he never set a foot in Italy and that he based his Italian views on prints. Schatborn assumes that Houbraken was right and suggests that even the 58 ‘views from life in Italy’ (Paris, Fondation Custodia, inv.no. 6481) are probably all copies after drawings from life by Jan de Bisschop (Schatborn et al. 2001, p. 199).
  • Gorinchem 1652 - 1679
He executed several assignments for the city: in 1658 commissioned by the city of Gorinchem for a number of sketches for coats of arms (Tissink/De Wit 1987, p. 55) made the illustrations for 'De Historien der Vromen Martelaren' from 1659 (Tissink /De Wit 1987, p. 53). Between 1660-1679 he held public office, even as burgomaster. In 1679 however he fled Gorinchem for a short time on account of accusations of corruption, during which time he stayed briefly in The Hague (Tissink/De Wit 1987, p. 44-45); he finally left Gorinchem, for good probably around 1683 (Willigen/Kinkelder 1993/1998).
