When he married in 1642 he lived with his father in the Kalverstraat; in 1644 he lived in the Hartenstraat; in 1661 he lived with his family at the Rokin 'naest de kerck' or 'by de groote Capel'; his wife died in 1661 and left him with 7 minor children; between 1664 and 1666 he lived in de Kalverstraat; in 1667-1668 he lived in the Leidse straat; in 1670 he lived in the Utrechtse straat. From 1667 onwards he was in debt and had trouble paying his rent (Bredius 1916).

He entered the overseas service of the VOC (Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie) as a comforter of the sick and stated on 27 November 1673 that he was about to leave on the ship 'Wapen van Rotterdam' (Bredius 1916, p. 598). This ship left Texel on 16 December 1673 and set sail to the Shetland Islands to avoid the passage of the Channel.

After having suffered damage in bad weather conditions, the Wapen of Rotterdam was forced to take shelter at Ronas Voe for some months, where it was attacked and conquered by the British Navy on 14 March 1674. 300 men of the Dutch crew or 400 were killed; the ship was directed to Harwich (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Ronas_Voe). Jan Victors was probably among the c. 100 survivors who were put ashore in Hawich and returned to the Republic by packet boat in April 1674 (R. van Leeuwen, May 2022).

At the request of his son Victor Victor, his sister Styntge and her husband declared in 1683 that Jan Victors had left on the ship 'Rammekens' to the East Indies in 1676 as a comforter of the sick and that he died there (Bredius 1916, p. 600). The ship left Texel on 14 September 1676, arrived at Cape on 12 February 1677 and at Tuticorin on 3 June 1677(http://resources.huygens.knaw.nl/das/detailVoyage/92410 and https://www.vocsite.nl/schepen/detail.php?id=10859).

It is generally assumed that Jan Victors was a pupil of Rembrandt in the second half of the year 1630. His earliest dated paintings date from 1640 (Sumowski vol. 4, nos. 1726, 1785, 1811). There are no 17th-century documents that support a stay in Rembrandt's workshop. The earliest mention concerns a Haarlem inventory from 1722, in which the following is mentioned: 'Een mans portrait door Bol of Fictor, de beste discipelen van Rembrandt' [A mans portrait by Bol or Fictor, the best pupils of Rembrandt] (Biesboer 2002).
