According to Houbraken he went there with Hendrik Frans van Lint to make drawings (Houbraken 1721, vol. 3, p. 48). When he left Rome is not recorded. As he was unmarried and financially very well off, he probably constantly travelled around as he pleased.

First recorded back again in Amsterdam in 1742, when he lived in the boarding house of a widow Jan Brouwer on Prinsengracht. His collection of paintings and all his painting utensils were auctioned off on 17 June 1748 (Saur 2022)
