De jurist Maus is vooral bekend geworden als secretaris van de kunstenaarsvereniging Les XX. Hij voerde een uitgebreide correspondentie met de kunstenaars van zijn tijd, van wie hij ook werk aankocht. In 1894 richtte hij de kunstenaarsvereniging La Libre Esthétique op in Brussel. Ook was hij mede-oprichter van het tijdschrift l'Art Moderne.
