Van der Willigen/De Kinkelder (typescript 1993/1998) (Denis van Alsloot (c.1570 - c.1627) Born at Mechlin, where his father was a tapestry worker; teacher unknown. First recorded in 1599 when he joined the guild at Brussels. Probably in the same year he was appointed as court painter by the archducal couple Albrecht and Isabella; a first pupil, François des Saint-Saule (never qualified), was also taken on in 1599. Apparently he had good credentials when he got to Brussels. Pictorial evidence from his early works suggests the influence of a.o. Gillis(III) van Conincxloo, but there is no indication at all about his whereabouts before settling at Brussels; his known activities - dated works from 1606 to 1626 - must all be placed at Brussels anyhow. In 1626 he still dated a painting but in 1628 two works he had left to a niece were bought by the Archduchess Isabella. In the summary below a group, here called "commissioned works" (for ease of reference only), is first singled out in order to make his usual style stand out better. Under landscapes a sub-group, co-signed by Hendrick de Clerck, has been created for the same purpose. As to signatures it would seem the painter always spelled out his surname fully (upto c.1611); letters like SARP at the end of his name denote his status as painter of the court. Commissioned works: Nantes 1609; Brussels 1612; Brussels 1613; Madrid 1616; Brussels 1620: all portraying Brussels landscapes that were close to the life of the archducal couple. London, Victoria & Albert Museum (2x) and Madrid, Prado (2x) 1616: parts of a well-researched series depicting a Brussels procession in May 1615. Landscapes: Instituut Collectie Nederland/Maastricht 1608; Antwerp 1610; Richmond VA. Earliest known is a 1606 panel first seen with art-dealer Wengraf in 1975 or even a copperplate bearing the maker's mark 1605 that turned up in sale Sotheby's 9 April 1986 (ill. in cat.). An example in a Parisian private collection. (ill. in exhib. cat. Brussels 1965) attests that the painter produced these forest landscapes with subordinate figuration also on small panels. Paintings co-signed by Hendrick de Clerck: Vienna 1608; Louvain, Jesuit College 1611; New Orleans 1612 (marked by van Alsloot only, but unmistakably belonging to the same group); Bayer. Staatsgemäldesammlungen, Munich. Another example appeared in the market in 1967 (ill. in Weltkunst 1967, p. 1020), the reading of its date later corrected to 1615 (col. ill. in Weltkunst 1976, p. 279). These co-productions concern landscapes with extensive mythological or biblical animation, but it is quite possible that non-marked figures by de Clerck do occur in other landscapes by Van Alsloot. Though not marked for some unknown reason by either of the two, large works at Karlsruhe and Paris plus a smaller one at Hartford CT, all illustrating the story of Diana and Callisto, seem to be very soundly attributed to the two. Winterscapes: Paris 1610; Brussels 1611; Dessau-Mosigkau 1614. An other 1610 example has turned up in 1988 with art-dealer Sankt Lucas,Vienna (ill. in cat.).
