Jager 2016 equates Joannes with the brother of Sijbrand van der Bent, who was baptized on 21 September 1638 and therefore considerable older than Houbraken assumed (Jager 2016)

According to Houbraken he died in 1690, c. 40 years old ('bij en omtrent de 40 jaren') of tuberculosis (Houbraken 1718-1721).

Son of the carpenter in ebbony and art dealer Willem Sijbrantsz. van der Bent and Marritge Jansdr. Romans; their first son was baptized 1 January 1637: the (still-life? painter Sijbrand ;on 21 September 1638 they had a second son baptized Joannes (probably the landscape artist Johannes van der Bent) They also had a daughter Brigitta, who married 1672 a Haarlem vine-merchant named Gilles de Clerq and younger son Willem, who became a silversmith; another daughter Maria, milliner and art dealer, married Hendrik Jansz. Schagen, a milline. The couple catered according to Jager 2016 only to the higher segment of the market, like the Berlin Court. Their oldest son Johannes van der Bent (and not Schagen), baptized 6 April 1665, became agent for Brandenburg in Amsterdam; their daughter Maria married in 1704 in Abcoude the Antwerp merchant Louis Francoisz. Aubert, while their daughter Agata married merchant and banker John Drummond, a business relation of painter Jan van der Heyden (Jager 2016).
