was van 1762 tot 1796 tsarina van Rusland. In twintig jaar tijd kocht Catharina 4.000 schilderijen; zij kocht hele collecties op of grote delen daarvan. In de winter van 1763/1764 kocht zij het leeuwendeel van de collectie van de Berlijnse handelaar Johann Ernst Gotzkowsky en in 1769 kocht zij zeshonderd schilderijen van Heinrich von Brühl. In 1772 verwierf zij via Denis Diderot de collectie Pierre Crozat. De verzameling van Sir Horace Walpole van Houghton Hall werd haar eigendom in 1779.
