    during his spare time he made his first drawings on the parental farm (Trepesch et al. 2007, p. 167)
  • Innsbruck 1860 - 1866
    After the death of his parents (1841 and 1858), Defregger sold the farm and went to Innsbruck, where he studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule
  • München 1866 - 1872
    Got a study place at the Academy of Fine Arts; first exhibition in the art exhibition in the Glas-Palast in Munich 1869; got married to Anna Müller and moved to Bolsano/Bozen

    After 1897 he came twice a year to Bolzano.

    Returned from Bolzano to Munich, where he was named professor for History Painting in 1878 at the Academy; during this time many official consignments from the Bavarian authorities and royal court. In 1883 he was ennobled in Bavaria ('von' added to his name). His wife Anna died in 1902. In 1910 he satrted to suffer from gray cataract; his last dated works are from 1917.
