son of Christoph von Dohna-Schlobitten (1583-1637) lord Chamberlain and secret councillor of Frederik V, the Winter King in Prague and Ursula von Solms-Braunfels (1594-1657), sister to Amalia von Solms Braunfels, who was married to prince Frederic Henry of Orange. He was married in Pont de Veyle on 29 October 1656 to Esperence, a daughter of Jean du Puy de Montbrun, Comte de Ferrassières et de Pont-de-Vesle. Father of 9 children among which were Alexander von Dohna-Schlobitten (1661-1728), Henrietta Ursula von Dohna-Schlobitten (1663-1712), Christoph I zu Dohna-Schlodien (1665-1733) and Sophie Albertine, Viscountess and Countess zu Dohna-Carwinden (1674-1746)

    After the fall of the Winter King his parents fled to Küstrin, where Friedrich was born.
  • Delft (stad) 1629 - 1636
    He passed most of his youth in Carwinden, Delft and Orange. Friedrich first served in 1636 under Henry Casimir II of Nassau Dietz in the Dutch army and rose to the rank of lieutenant general.
  • Orange (Frankrijk) 1649 - 1660
    In 1649 his cousin William II of Orange appointed governor of the principality of Orange, a post his father had held before him. He served till Louis XIV annexed the principality in 1660.
  • Lutry (Vaud) 1660 - 1688-03-27
    He purchased the barony of Coppet on the north shore of Lake Geneva in 1657. He turned the castle into a more elegant chateau. It was here that he retired after leaving Orange. He forfilled several diplomatic services for Elector Frederick William of Brandenburg, the most important of which was a vain effort to bring Switzerland into the alliance against Louis XIV. When tention between Switzerland and Savoy rose in 1667 he was appointed commander in chief in the defense of Geneva. As a consequence he was granted citizenship by the canton of Bern. Medical problems eventually prevented him from returning to active service in Holland or diplomatic service in Brandenburg. He only militairily advised William III at a distance. He eventually died in Coppet and was buried, on the instigation of the Swiss government, in Lausanne.
