Guillam Du Bois

painter, draftsman
North Netherlandish
Haarlem 1623-10-11/1625-07-06
1610 has erroneously been listed as the birth year based purely on a misread date '1632' (which actually reads '1652') on a painting in the collection of John. G. Johnson, Philadelphia. The earliest known dated work is from 1644, providing an estimated birth date between c. 1620-1625. Giltaij uncovered two births in Haarlem which may apply to Du Bois: on 11 October 1623, a Guillam was born to Daniel du Bois and Maeyke van Pene, on 6 July 1625 a Guillam was born to Jean du Bois and Elisabeth Macque. The former couples' list of heirs dated 1659 does not mention the name Guillame, enabling us to assume that the later date of 1625 is the birth date of the artist (Giltaij 1977, p. 145-146).
Haarlem 1680-07/1680-07-07
buried 7 July 1680 (Van der Willigen 1870); Van Thiel-Stroman 2006 still supposes: 'Haarlem (?) in or after 1653', as accoring to her it was not the painter who was buried on that date.
