    Having met the artist Benedikt Claus (1632/3–1707), he left home at 15 to join him in Vienna, and three years later accompanied him to Italy.

    From c. 1685 Kupezsky worked in Venice and other north Italian towns before settling in Rome.

    C. 1700 he established his own studio in Rome and probably in 1706 he left the eternal city for returning to Venice.

    accompanied by Gottfried Eichler for a second stay in Venice. In the end he spent 22 or 23 years in Italy, from 1684 to 1706 or 1707.

    Having gained recognition as an eminent portrait painter Kupezsky moved, c. 1706 or 1707, to Vienna at the invitation of Prince Adam von Liechtenstein where he stayed with some interruptions until about 1725. On 29 December 1709 he married in Vienna. During this time in Vienna he had painted almost only portraits (Dvorák 1957, p. 43).

    In Karlsbad he painted a portrait of the Tsar Peter the Great who stayed in the city in 1711 or 1712 (Šafařik 2001).

    In 1716 he worked in Prague for a short time (Turner et al. 1996).

    On his way to Dresden in 1716 Kupezsky stopped in Prague (Dvorák 1957, p. 40).
