Family relationships this field records any family relationship to one or more other artist(s).: According to von Wurzbach 1910 his father and therefore progenitor of the Van Loo dynasty was Johannes van Loo. Mandrella 2011 was the first to engage more fully in the genealogy of the van Loo's from Sluis in Zealand, giving in passing the likely reasons why we are so badly informed on it: the main reason being the bombardment of Middelburg on 17 May 1940, in which the state archive for Zealand were almost whiped out (only burnt and charred remains are left). A second important reason is that, when the Van Loo's gained importance and nobility in Europe at the end of the 17th and 18th century, its members started to obfuscate their true genealogy to come to a more desirable and distinguished result, in which they descended from the patrician Van Loo family from Haarlem (completely untrue), more in keeping with their aspirations. Mandrella 2011 records the few original documents that are still in existance (p. 22-23, esp. notes 45-73). He does not record Johannes at all and gives Jacob father's and mother's names as Jacques van Loo (died 1632 in Middelburg, buried in Sluis) and Maria de Put (died 1661 in Sluis). Jacob was married in Amsterdam on 7 August 1643 to Anna Lengele (died 1656); brother-in-law of the painter Martin Lengele and Jacob Pijl; father of Louis and through him forefather of the family of painters Vanloo; grandfather of Amédée Van Loo; related to the Mijtens family of painters.

the family's home in Hoogstraat was apparently demolished by a canon shot, which forced the family to leave the town when the 12 Year's Truth (1609-1621) expired. Earlier they had to cross the water already to Flushing, when Sluis was (temporarily) conquered again by the Spanish (Mandrella 2011).

Amsterdam (stad) 1642 - 1660
First mentioned in Amsterdam in August 1635 (Briels 1997); bought citizenship on 24 January in 1652 (Scheltema 1853, p. 69); fled in 1660 with his whole amily, after a fight in an inn on 31 October 1660 in which he mortally knived a certain Hendrik Breda. Van Loo was sentenced to death in absentia and was banned for ever from Holland and West-Friesland.
Parijs 1660 - 1670
to become a member of the Académie Royale de Peinture he was ordered to paint the portrait of minister Colbert on 26 November 1661. When it proved impossible to paint Colbert, he was ordered to paint Corneille as soon as possible (7 January 1662); Sieur Vanloo brought the work he had been ordered, which was approved by the company, and its reception was deferred on the rumors which cross his reputation touching his morals, until he brought an act of certification of his good life, which will be observed in the future on all foreigners (6 May 1662). After presenting this act of good behaviour his work was accepted and he became a member (3 March 1663). On 9 February 1669 his daughter Marie, aged 17, was buried on the protestant cemetery of the Saints-Pères. Her brother Jean, goldsmith was present. On 1 August 1670 he was paid 1700 livres for a larg group portrait of the aldermen and prevost of the Comptabilité du domaine patrimonial de la ville de Paris. 1670 he lived rue des Fossés-Saint-Germain, paroisse Saint-Sulpice. He nevertheless died on 26 November 1690 in his house rue Dauphine and was buried on the cemetery of faubourg Saint-Germain on 27 November at five p.m. He was accompagnied by his sons Philippe, député de la Compagnie royale des Indes Orientales, and Abraham and Jean Vanloo, painters (Levert 2017A, Dossier prosopographique)
