In a deed of 14 January 1620 (Duverger 1985) he is said to be 72 years old, which would indicate 1547-48 as the year of his birth; Rombouts/van Lerius 1872/1961, vol. 1, p. 265 note 4 states that he was 94 years old, when he died on 1 October 1638, which would mean 1544; van Hemeldonck 2007 gives a deed of 21 May 1583, where he is said to be 35 years old (= 1548).

He and his wife Paulina were buried in St. Joris Church Antwerp: their grave was adorned with the portrait of Jan, painted by Anthony van Dyck (Rombouts/van Lerius 1872/1961, vol. 1, p. 265 note 4).
