He made his will on 29 July 1649 and died shortly afterwards (Duverger/Vlieghe 1971); according to Ecartico he died on that day; his death duties were met however between 18 September 1649 and 17 September 1650: as 29 July 1649 does not fall within this period, it is highly unlikely, that he died in July (JKO, 2020-01) (Rombouts/Van Lerius 1872/1961). Houbraken mistakenly gives 1694 as the year of death (Houbraken 1718-1721, vol. 1, p. 115).

Van der Willigen/De Kinkelder (typescript 1993/1998) (David (I) Teniers (1582 - shortly after 29 July 1649). Born at Antwerp. In 1595 he became a pupil of his elder brother Juliaen I. In the early 1600s he spent some years in Rome where, according to De Bie 1662, he studied under Adam Elsheimer. De Bie's other claim that David (I) was a pupil of Peter Paul Rubens must be rejected but they must have known each other, possibly already in Rome. In 1605 he was back in Antwerp, joining the guild and getting married in 1608. David (I) is known for biblical scenes as well as landscapes with religious or mythological themes. He took many pupils into his workshop (incl. his own four sons), speculated in real estate (insolvency in the late 1620s) and was active as a dealer (visiting Paris as such in 1635). He made his will on 29 July 1649 and shortly after died (ed. M. de Kinkelder, October 2010).)
