Houbraken states, that he was born ' Overmaas', e.g. on the other side of the river Maas. In reality Adriaen was born in Poortugaal (a village near Rotterdam) and baptized on 9 April 1623. Until recently it was said that he was born c. 1620 in Flushing ( Vlissingen), but this is without any foundation

Buried on 19 January 1675, although it is not certain that this our painter: a certain Adriaen Verdoel ' fijnschilder' became a member of the Guild in Middelburg (family relations unknown)

Son of Joris Claesz. Verdoel (corn miller) (1585-1631/37) and Susanna IJsbrantsdr. Van Bijlant (c. 1583-1650). Bonds of friendship and business tied him to Franchois van den Ende, schoolmaster (of Spinoza) and art dealer in the Nes in Amsterdam. He was also a friend of writer/poet Joannes Antonides van der Goes (1647-1684), a pupil of Van den Ende (Houbraken). Adriaen was marrried with Cornelia Willemsdr. (date unknown), with whom he made a will in Haarlem in February 1654, while she was pregnant.. On 28 August 1655 he is styled widower with a 20-weeks old son Nicolaes, signing a prenuptial agreement with his second wife Maria Cornelisdr. van Warmondt on 21 August 1655
