    On the return journey from Rome he met Joan Huydecooper II, the son of the Amsterdam mayor, who persuaded him to go back with him to Rome, which he did (Houbraken 1719, p. 194).

In 1672 alderman of the city of Gorinchem and in 1675 member of the city council, again from 1679 till 1681; master of the hospital (gasthuismeester), in 1681 and 1682 alderman again; 'heemraad' (member of the board for the county's water management) and in 1684 municipal receiver. Also in 1681 and 1689 elder in his church (Tissink/De Wit 1987, p. 69).
