    1880 for the painting Onder Vrienden; has received many other awards as well (Scheen 1981)
  • He was the only contender for the Prix de Rome 1883. Because of lack of compitition the prize was not awarded. Van der Waay's professor Allebé then successfully sought a royal stipendium so that Van der Waay might still benefit from travelling to Italy and France in 1884.
