It is said that he was 29 years old in November 1571 (White 1999, p. 113, n. 1); according to his will he was born in 'Bolnick' in Brabant (White 1999, p. 112), also referred to as Bombaye (Bolbeek), a village south of Liege.

    Came to England in 1567 , 'on account of religion' and is referred to as 'of the age of 29 yeres, carver in stone' in the Return of Aliens for the parish of St. George's, Southwark (London), 1571, where his wife Jane, born in Ghent, and his son Stephen, 5 years old are recorded (Cust 1903A; Thieme/Becker 1938). In the 1568 Return of Aliens he is mentioned as living with a 'Mr. Turke', together with the Dutch/Flemish painters Hans and Henry (Hendrick ?) Orleons at St. Olave Southwark (Town 2014).
