Upon his return to Venice, he was made a cavaliere. He became active in city politics and used his immense wealth to gain the acclaim of the people. From 26 April 1595 until his death he became the 89th Doge of Venice. His term in office is caracterized by 1) the lavish festivities to celebrate his becoming doge, and after this, more public rejoicing over the crowning of his wife as dogeressa, and 2) his quarrel with the papacy over matters of competence (This dispute was unresolved at his death in 1605 and would lead eventually to Pope Paul V placing the Republic of Venice under papal interdict 1606-1607, resolved eventually in 1625).
