Königliche Kunst- und Gewerbeschule (Breslau)
Erler studeerde in 1885-88 aan de Königliche Kunst- und Gewerbeschule Breslau, in 1889-90 aan de kunstacademie in Berlijn, Weimar en München en tussen 1892 en 1894 aan de Académie Julian in Parijs. In 1907 werd Erler benoemd tot professor aan de Münchener Kunstakademie.
