There is some uncertainty whether Allebé went to Paris in 1857 or 1858. Vosmaer 1884, Augusts handwritten corrections on a proof and Van Duyl 1896 state the year of 1857. But in a letter to Jan Veth, dated 1917-09-04, Allebé wrote 'begin 1858'. The supercription on a drawing by Allebé made in March 1858 reads: 'Dit is het allereerste wat ik getekend heb toen ik voor het eerst in Parijs kwam, Rue Valois 8, maart 1858'. There is the possibility that he may have had some time to process his impressions before he started with this drawing. Also, the possibility is not excluded that he set off in 1857, but spent some time in Brussels before he arrived in Paris; Loos, Tuyll van Serooskerken 1988, pp. 21-22 and 47 note 66
