    'Jean Louis de Marne (1744-1829) war noch Historienmaler, als er 1772 vergeblich mit J.L. David um den Rompreis stritt. Nach diesem Misserfolg wandte er sich dem freundlichen Genre- und Landschafsbild zu. Er radierte in Berchems Manier und malte zahlreiche lievenswürdige Bildchen im Stil von Wouwerman, Ostade und Jan van der Heyden. Die beiden Bilder im Louvre sind sehr gelungene Beispiele dieser Kunst. [noot 2:] Nrs. 221/2. [...]' (Gerson/Meijer 1942/1983, p. 114)
