Current attribution
attributed to Rembrandt
or circle of Rembrandt
This painting was generally considered as a Rembrandt until Bredius attributed it to Gerard Dou (Bredius 1935, no. 425). The RRP characterized it as from the circle of Rembrandt, possibly Gerard Dou (Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 1 (1982), no. C 18). Van de Wetering followed this attribution but added that a reattribution to Rembrandt should be considered (Wetering e.a 2001, p. 77-78, p. 298-301, no. 59). Since then most art historians view this painting as (possibly) by Rembrandt (see for instance: Manuth/Rüger 2004, p. 262-277; De Witt 2008, no. 164).
