Merian kwam op 23 september 1701 in Holland aan, nadat ze sinds augustus 1699 in Suriname vertoefd had; in een brief van Merian van 8 oktober 1702 maakte zij melding van inschrijving op 'dem Ambonischen werck' en waren de tekeningen die zij hiervoor had gemaakt waarschijnlijk geheel of deels gereed. (Wettengl 1997-1998, p. 264-265)
