During the attribution session 'Market of Ideas', CODART-congress Aix-la-Chapelle 2009 Dr. Hannah Benesz (Warsaw) presented this painting and asked for ideas about the attribution. Artus Wolfordt, W. Wolfvoet, Araham Janssens etc were all put forward as possible authors. At that occasion I proposed a possible attribution to Josse de Pape. A problem is that only one signed and dated work by De pape is known (Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam SK-A 2961;RKDImages nr 71932) , which is maybe too narrow a base for a sound attribution. De Pape was an up and coming man in his generation. After his training he went to Roem, where he seems to have got a contract to decorate a church. His untimely death prevented the execution. See for details of this project RKDArtists&c. (Jan Kosten, 2010/7)
