attributed to Rembrandt
or follower of Rembrandt
This painting was always viewed as an autograph Rembrandt until Gerson qualified it as a work from a student, possibly Gerbrand van den Eeckhout (Bredius/Gerson 1969, no. 591). Only Sumowski remained convinced of the attribution to Rembrandt (Sumowski 1983-1994, vol. 1 (1983), p. 22, note 32). In 2006 Bob van den Boogerd suggested to give further consideration to a reattribution to Rembrandt (Kelch/Van de Wetering 2006, no. 51). According to their website, the Wallraf Richartz Museum classifies the painting as “attributed to Rembrandt”. However, not all art historians are convinced of this attribution (not included in the latest volume of the Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings).
